Why support ELAND?
Because your donation can transform the lives of children and families through ELAND's educational, health, environmental and economic efforts.
The ELAND Child Sponsorship Progam is key for future development
While both boys and girls are affected by high drop out rates, female survival is hampered by unique prevalent practices. In the past few years, drought and poverty have caused untold suffering among the Maasai. Their livestock are dying and they have no food for their families. The hunger and overriding poverty has deepened their need for livestock and money.
During the dry period, boys and girls are forced out of schools to follow the migrating livestock in search of water and pastures. Most children who are not enrolled in school are prevented from attending by family poverty and distance from school. Poor parents often cannot afford school fees for both their girls and boys and thus tend to keep the girls at home. Normally it is the girl child who is sacrificed when it comes to paying school fees.
No country has emerged from third-world status without educating its people. The level of education is strongly associated with increased economic productivity, improved health, smaller family size and education of the next generation of children. Women who have completed their education marry later and are more likely to be economically stable. By educating girls and women we increase their decision making power. SPONSOR A CHILD NOW
Your donations help to fund other ELAND programs
After a very successful fundraising effort in the second half of 2007, we built a community resource center to house a library and a museum for traditional Maasai artifacts
in early 2008. We are thankful for those who made the building possible. Continued donations to the center will help fill the library and encourage the culture of reading that we hope to inspire among the rural children.
